Statement from the Elphin Diocesan Office in relation to a complaint against a priest of a missionary society who has been ministering in the Diocese of Elphin

On Thursday last Fr Kevin Reynolds agreed to stand aside from ministry in his parish. Fr Reynolds is a member of the Mill Hill Missionary Society. It will now have the responsibility of undertaking an investigation in relation to the allegations which were broadcast last night on RTE. Fr Reynolds’ agreement to stand aside accords with Church procedures in a matter of this nature.

Although the information available to Bishop Jones is only that which was broadcast by RTE, he has, as a precautionary measure, made a notification to the Gardai and the Health Service Executive.

Bishop Jones realises that parishioners will have been dismayed to learn of these allegations. It is important that such investigations as will now be required are carried out without unnecessary delay.

In Fr Reynolds’s absence the parish of Ahascragh will be cared for by Fr Liam Devine who is the Vicar Forane for the area.
